From the recording Highway Lights and Late Night Shows
I spent years traveling the highways with Christian bands, living out of a suitcase and chasing the next church, concert, and stage. We drove long miles, slept in countless hotels, shared laughs and late-night conversations, and sometimes wondered where the next meal—or the next show—would come from.
But when the lights came on and the music started, none of the miles mattered. We played our hearts out, shared the message through music, and watched audiences sing along. Those years on the road taught me that ministry wasn't always about where we were going—it was about the people we met along the way.
Looking back, I wouldn't trade those miles, those friendships, or those moments on stage for anything. The road was long, but the music and sharing God's message of hope made every mile worthwhile.
Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Miles rolling under these wheels again
Sunrise burning through a motel stain
Suitcase living, keep my name on the door
City after city, always chasing one more
Neon buzzing like a restless song
Another late checkout, then we’re already gone
Posters peeling on a backstage wall
We plug in the chords and we answer the call
[Chorus]
Living out a suitcase, sleeping in the glow
Highway lights are leading everywhere we go (ooh, ahh)
Crowds in the distance calling out our name
Busy on the road, but I’d do it all the same (ooh, ahh)
[Verse 2]
Soundcheck humming in an empty hall
Echo of my footsteps down the loading dock wall
Coffee in a paper cup, midnight phone
Try to reach home but the line feels stone
Set list scribbled on a torn-out page
Amp tubes glowing like a tiny stage
The roar hits hard when the house lights fade
We live for the moment that the music made
[Chorus]
Living out a suitcase, sleeping in the glow
Highway lights are leading everywhere we go (ooh, ahh)
Crowds in the distance calling out our name
Busy on the road, but I’d do it all the same (ooh, ahh)
[Bridge]
White lines, long nights, rolling down the line (yeah)
Voices in the dark keep singing in time (ooh)
Every lonely minute when the world feels far (yeah)
We find each other underneath these stars (ooh, ahh)
[A Section]
Guitar crying steady with a slide in hand
Drums keep pounding like a heart of the band (ooh, ahh)
Voices lifting higher over every town
Busy but the music never lets us down
[B Section]
Stage lights blinding while the crowd sings along
Hands reaching upward to the soul of the song (ooh, ahh)
We trade these hours for the stories we tell
On a one-way highway where the echoes swell
[C Section]
Vans keep rolling through the dead of night
Another new horizon in the morning light (ooh, ahh)
If the road is the price for this rock and roll
I’ll keep on running with a wide-open soul
