Back in the 1980s, I had a cat and a dog who occasionally found themselves home alone for a little too long. Our Jack Russell Terrier was the runt of the litter, but he certainly didn’t have a runt-sized personality—or a runt-sized talent for getting into trouble!

Every now and then, he would manage to escape from his crate and go straight to work. His favorite projects involved the trash and toilet paper, which he would enthusiastically spread throughout the house. By the time we got home, it looked like he had been hired to redecorate!

And then came the best part. As soon as he heard us come through the door, he would disappear under the living room couch, apparently hoping we would blame the whole thing on the cat.

Years later, I wrote this song about those unforgettable adventures. It’s dedicated to everyone who has ever come home to discover that their pets have gotten loose and decided to spread a little “good cheer” around the house—one trash bag and roll of toilet paper at a time.

So, if you’ve ever wondered what your pets do when you’re away…this song might give you a pretty good idea!

Lyrics

There’s a cat named Steve and a dog named Doug
The cat is grey and the dog is a pug
When the owner left home to go to work
got in the trash and they played all day

They played,
All over the house they played
When the owner gets home
Steve and Doug better hide

Steve and Doug had lots of fun
When the owner gets home he’ll pull the plug
There was trash over here and trash over there
It was messy everywhere

They played,
All over the house they played
When the owner gets home
Steve and Doug better hide

When Steve and Doug heard the clock chime four.
Close to the time the owner opens the door.
They ran to the couch to do a hide
It was messy everywhere

They played,
All over the house they played
When the owner gets home
Steve and Doug better hide

When the owner gets home
Steve and Doug better………… hide
